A warm welcome for Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and
2018 Golden Globe Race skippers
Fifty years after Sir Robin Knox-Johnston set out from Falmouth in his yacht Suhaili to sail single-handed around the world in the 1968-69 Golden Globe Race the RCYC was delighted to welcome him back ashore at the Club and to become an Honorary member.
The Commodore, Bob Collings, presented Sir Robin with a framed burgee commemorating this tremendous achievement, and also a RCYC cap!
Everyone present enjoyed hearing Sir Robin recount some stories from his historic journey and the Golden Globe 2018 skippers (pictured below) were clearly inspired by him. You can follow their progress en route to Les Sable d’Olonne for the start of the Golden Globe race on the GGR website
The atmosphere in the Club was lovely and we would like to thank our bar and catering team for producing an outstanding BBQ for over 300 people. Thank you also to Tracey, Lyn and the social committee volunteers who helped the evening run smoothly. We must also thank Andrew Pool for arranging the ambassadors for the GGR skippers and the press boats for the Suhaili 50 Parade of Sail.

Round Britain & Ireland Race
RCYC members Bob Warren and Gilly Fox in Jackdaw are leading the monohull class in the Twohanded Round Britain and Ireland Race after the second leg which is a considerable achievement.
From the Yellowbrick Tracker it looks as if the whole fleet is now sheltering from 30 knot winds in Castlebay on the island of Barra on the Outer Hebrides where the second leg finished. All boats have a compulsory 48 hour stopover there but appear to be waiting for the wind to abate before putting to sea again.
Anyone wanting to follow their progress can do so by going to the Royal Western website, find RTBI page and click on Tracking.
the Quiz Night scheduled for next Wednesday 20th June is cancelled – apologies for disappointing anyone who was thinking of coming along. The next Quiz Night is on Wednesday 18th July at 7pm – the list is in the bar or click on the link below to add your name. Quiz Nights are fun and informal and just £1 to enter.
Champagne & Strawberries
The date has been set, the strawberries are ripening and the champagne is on ice!
