Training Courses RCYC Spring 2018
It’s that time of year again! The club has laid on courses for First Aid, VHF and powerboat driving. Some courses will be held at the Falmouth School of Sailing, others will be held at the club; full details will be in the joining instructions. The cost of each course is shown in the attached document and they have been kept to a minimum. All course costs represent a substantial saving on costs at other commercial training providers and benefit from a club member saving we have negotiated with Falmouth School of Sailing.
Six Nations Rugby
Come and watch the Six Nations Rugby on our large TV screen in the Upper Deck. We will be showing matches when we have no other Club function on but we do need to know that you are planning to come in so that we can arrange to keep the Bar open! The first match we are screening is Italy v England on Sunday 4 February at 3pm.
Some of you will know Mervyn Wheatley, who has been a competitor in the AZAB Race over many years and who has also taken part in numerous single-handed transatlantic races. Mervyn is a great speaker and no doubt his talk will feature his 19th transatlantic crossing in 2017 when he hit an unusually extreme North Atlantic storm in his yacht ‘Tamarind’…..Book early as this talk is sure to be popular!
FILM NIGHT – Friday 19 January at 8pm
The Club will be screening ARTHUR (1981). Starring Dudley Moore, Liza Minelli and John Gielgud. If you haven’t seen the film – it’s a Comedy Romance and the story of a Happy Drunk who stands to inherit a vast fortune but there are conditions …………. A good opportunity to catch a classic film and enjoy a laugh at this dreary time of year! Bar and Catering available too.
QUIZ NIGHT – Wednesday 24 January at 7pm
First quiz of the year so get your name down quickly…..Grant Walker is our quiz host. If you have not been to a quiz night before it is a lot of fun. Just £1 per person to enter, the money then forming the quiz prize at the end of the evening. Suppers are available to order and there are also some nibbles during the first round of the quiz, free of charge.
WALK – Penrose Ramble – Sunday 28 January, 10am
Penrose Hill Car Park – Loe Pool – Bar Lodge – Helston Lodge – Penrose Hill. Carvery Lunch a the Club after the walk.
A round walk through the woods and tracks of the Penrose Estate, with a detour to/from Bar Lodge for Loe Bar. (The Coast Path is closed from here towards Porthleven due to landslips.)
No stiles, under 4 miles, but some of the paths are VERY muddy and appropriate footwear is essential. On the way back from Loe Bar we pass The Stables, where the cafe should be open (no indoor seating). Return to the car park through the Parkland and past the bath house.
Meet at 10.00 at the National Trust Penrose Hill public car park (£2 donation box for non-members). To get there from Falmouth, take the A394 to Helston, stay on this road (direction Penzance), at the double roundabout at the bottom of the hill turn left onto the B3304 for Porthleven. After about 2 miles, where main road bends right, go straight ahead at the junction (signposted Loe Bar). The car park is signposted on the left in 50 yards.

TALK – Friday 2 February at 8pm
“Images of the Past – the Legacy of a Falmouth Familyâ€
with Peter Searle
The talk will be a short ‘Who do you think you are?’ of Falmouth’s Osborne family who were photographers for over one hundred years (of which some ninety were in Falmouth) and spanned four generations. Many local residents today still recall their visit to Osborne’s for their studio portrait or “that Mr Osborne took my wedding†This will be followed by a showing of some of his favourite, interesting old photographs of Falmouth and the local area from the Osborne Family collection. Peter has given his talk before at the Poly and the Club is lucky to have booked him. The talk is sure to be illuminating!
‘Falmouth Sunbeams racing past Cutty Sark in Falmouth Harbour, c. 1920s’
TALK – Friday 9 February at 8pm
“Piloting in Falmouth – Tall Ships to Super Tankers”
with Alex Head
Following on quickly behind, the next talk will be given by Alex Head, who is a pilot at Falmouth. The Falmouth Port boasts one of the world’s largest natural deep water harbours and Alex will give us an insight into his experience both in his Merchant Navy and pilot careers.
As usual food and bar are open at 6.30pm and the talks starts promptly at 8pm. There is no charge for the talks. Please add your name to the list in the bar or phone the Club – 01326 312126 or 311105.
Please note the Door Entry Code to the showers and toilets has been changed to – 0852
