SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING
Message from the Commodore
I was delighted to see so many members had made the effort to attend our Special General Meeting on the 11th October. With 150 members present it was the largest number of Members attending a General Meeting for many years.
I should like to thank Peter Morgan (Honorary Secretary) for his efforts behind the scenes, and Lyn Sissons and Tracey Chamberlain for two excellent presentations on the necessity to introduce the proposed Capital Levy of £25 per Member and to raise the subscription level to 10% with effect from the 1st January 2018. The response from the floor was very positive and encouraging, and the result was that both motions were passed with majorities that well exceeded the two thirds required.
We now have a structured plan for the way ahead to enable the Club to prosper for the future generations and we must ensure that we act on that plan. Members can expect to have an update on progress at each Annual General Meeting for years to come, the first being next April 19th 2018. I hope to see you all there.
Copies of the slides used during the presentation are available on the Member’s page of the website.
We are very sorry to inform Members that Anne Beeching passed away on 2nd October, 2017. Anne was one of our long-standing Members, having joined the Club over 45 years ago. Our condolences are with family members.
The funeral has been arranged for Friday, 20th October at 3pm, St Feock Church. The Club Ensign will lay at half mast as a mark of respect.
The RYA Yachtmaster Ocean shorebased course
Thinking of doing the Azores and back in 2019? Want to brush up on some astro-nav? Planning a longer cruise, where you’ll be out of sight of land for a week or more? The RYA Yachtmaster Ocean shorebased course could be for you. This course, plus proof of appropriate sea-time, leads to qualification as an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean, which is the highest cruising qualification.
The club is planning to run the shorebased course this winter, on Saturdays and Wednesdays in January and March 2018. The cost for RCYC members will be £150 all in, which includes the study pack of exercises and learning material, and this represents a substantial saving on courses offered by commercial training providers. The instructor will be our very own Hon Sec, Peter Morgan, who has extensive experience as both an instructor and as a cruising yachtsman. If you’re interested in doing the course, please register your interest with Chris Davis (email: firstname.lastname@example.org) or with Peter Morgan (email: email@example.com) by 27 October.
Next social events
Quiz Night – Wednesday 18 October
The first of our popular Quiz Nights is taking place next Wednesday, 18th October at 7pm with Grant Walker as Quiz Master. Everyone is welcome, there is a £1 charge to enter the quiz, which forms the prize money at the end of the evening. Suppers are available to order and there are complimentary nibbles during the first round. If you have never been before, do come along and enjoy this light-hearted and fun evening.
Trafalgar Dinner, Saturday 21st October
The list for the Trafalgar Night Dinner is now full for the Upper Deck. Any further bookings will be seated in the Lower Deck area by the Bar.
Friday Night Talks
Last week saw the start of our regular slot of Friday talks. Capt Mark Coupland gave us a presentation on the Search and Rescue Service which operates out of Newquay Airport. There was a good turn out for the evening and everyone seemed to enjoy the subject. Mark has agreed that a visit can be arranged for members to the base at St Mawgan. Obviously the downside will be if the helicopters are out on a shout! A list is up in the bar if any members wish to show their interest. If there are enough names some dates will be arranged and further details will follow.
A reminder of the talks programme until Christmas –
20 October – The Cutty Sark with speaker David Pollard
3 November – The Wear and Tear of Horses in the Boer War with speaker John Head
10 November – An Introduction to Truro Cathedral with speaker Susie Greenslade
Some of you may know Susie Greenslade as she used to man the office at RCYC some years ago. Susie is a “Friend” at Truro Cathedral and will give us an insight into the history and other goings on at this most prominent building in our County.
The lists are up in the bar for all three talks so don’t forget to add your names when you are at the Club or alternatively email or call the office. Food commences at 6.30pm and talks start at 8pm sharp.
‘Yot Grot’ and Charity Coffee Morning
Saturday,18 November at 10am
Another reminder for YOT GROT! The Social Committee have organised some outside stall holders for this event but we desperately need bottles and unused toiletries for our Tombola and also unwanted books. Please see if you have any items to help make this event a success. Items can be dropped into the office any time soon. Thank you.
Meanderers’ Lunch – book your place!
If you’ve been meandering this year, or even just thought about it, please book your place at the post season lunch at the Club on Wednesday November 8th, 12.00 for 12.30.
This is always a very jolly event, and an opportunity – for all those for whom a day on the water (with a long, leisurely lunch) is one of life’s great pleasures – to meet up and reminisce. If you know of possible future meanderers who are not current members why not consider bringing them as guests; it’s often a good way into the Club.
The menu with 2 and 3 course options is good value and attached here……and on the Meanderers’ page of the website.
Please be kind enough to sign up in the book in the bar with your choice of menu, or if that is tricky for you Hugh Kellett has said he will sign up for you if you email him at firstname.lastname@example.org. He has also asked for any good photos you have of this season’s days out to be emailed to him, for an undisclosed reason.
