Working Boats racing in the Bay on Sunday – photo from Liz Hammick
Falmouth Week is almost over but it has been good! Our Regatta Day was a great success, the Club was really busy as can be seen from the photo below. We would like to thank our team of volunteers in the marquee who were serving delicious teas and cakes in the afternoon and also the volunteers serving drinks from the additional bar set up in the marquee to help ease the pressure. Thank you also to those members who baked a cake!
The Firework Display has been postponed to Saturday at 10pm due to rain forecast this evening. Do come along to the Club to watch the display across the water – the Club lawn is a great place to see the fireworks.
Our Falmouth Week Specials are running until tomorrow so why not take advantage of these before it is too late.
• pints of ale and bottles of lager for a measly £3
• a range of wines for just £15 a bottle
• small bottles of prosecco at a teeny-weeny £7.50
• a tasty range of light bites from a piffling £4.50
Finally, it is your last chance to try our hearty breakfast buffet served between 8am and 10am on Saturday morning.
Pink Wig craziness
A big thank you to all the members at the Club last Friday evening who donated to our own RCYC ‘Pink Wig’ event. Thank you to all of the wig wears including the bar staff, committee boat volunteers and our Commodore Bob Collings for joining in the fun, as well as Vice Commodore Roger Hollingsworth for shaking the bucket under everyone’s noses, helping to raise £106.01 (the penny donated by Jack Penty!). Special thanks to Charlie Choak who donated a Race Timer watch which raised £40 at auction, taking the total to £146.01.
RCYC Heroes – Robert Taylor and Daniel Wood
On Wednesday, during the Champagne race, the RCYC Ocean Safety boat on station was tasked by the coastguard to look for a missing diver. Initially the RIB was asked to go out to the ships lying offshore where one had reported seeing something in the water. On returning to join the search, Robert Taylor and Daniel Wood spotted the diver on a beach between Portoustock and Dean Quarry. Reporting in their find, the search helicopter lifted the casualty off the beach.
RCYC has been fully involved making Falmouth Regatta Week possible, Andrew Pool’s Sweat Briar has acted as the Bay committee boat, RCYC race Officer, Chris Davis has been the Bay course race office, and both RCYC safety boats acting as mark layers (using RCYC marks and ground tackle) have provided safety cover in Falmouth Bay.
A big THANK YOU to IAN ROYSTON for refurbishing the entrance porch which was looking a little tired and weather beaten.
Thursday is of course the normal day for meandering but that doesn’t always suit all Club members so we are planning a meander on Sunday August 20th, meet on the lawn at 10ish for a 10.15 departure, and let’s see if we can get more of you meandering. It’s the perfect melange of sailing and social.
For those who have never been meandering it works like this: turn up as skipper or crew at the Club around 10, all and any type of boat and all levels of crewing competence welcome. Bring a delicious packed lunch and something to refresh you and your shipmates, and go for a sail for a couple of hours with one of our generous skippers. Enjoy lunch in good company anchored in a romantic cove. Then do same in reverse, back at Club circa 4 pm. The only thing we try not to do is make it too much of a commitment on either side – there may be boats and there may be crew, but there may not be! If the fancy takes you do come along on Sunday August 20th and see who else turns up!
Our Junior Sailing sessions are building nicely and the youngsters seem to be having great fun. The next session is on Sunday 20th August. Please email Melody if you know of any children who would like to give it a try – firstname.lastname@example.org We have wetsuits, buoyancy aids and helmets for children to borrow but, if anyone does have their own, it may be worth them bringing them along. Dates for the rest of the season are as follows:
Sun 20th – 15:30-17:30pm September
Sat 2nd – 2:30-4:30pm
Sat 16th – 2-4pm
