Offshore and Long Distance Sailing a One Day Seminar

 

Saturday November 28th 2009 10.00 – 17.00

At The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, Greenbank, Falmouth

 

 

Jimmy Cornell, long distance cruising sailor, author of ‘World Cruising Routes’ and ‘A Passion for the Sea’ and founder of the ARC will return to the south west to facilitate his popular one day seminar on long distance and offshore cruising. Jimmy’s excellent photographs of many of the world’s most beautiful cruising areas will illustrate the three parts of his seminar.

 

The day will be hosted by the Royal Cornwall YC in their delightful riverside club house. The fee for attending will be £22.50 which will include lunch.

 

The day will be in three parts with breaks for coffee, lunch and tea.

 

The first part is ‘Planning your Dream Voyage’ and includes cruise planning for the Mediterranean, the Azores, the Caribbean or further afield, it focuses on best routes, seasons, weather, prevailing winds. It also covers essential features of a cruising yacht, climate change and its effects, passage planning for Madeira, Canaries, the eastern Caribbean (and back) or continuing round the world and high latitude cruising, Antarctica, Spitsbergen and Alaska.

 

The second part is ‘Practical Aspects of Offshore and Long Distance Cruising’ this includes, preparing the boat for a long voyage, personal safety, piracy, robberies, finances, costs, formalities, documents,  crew and crew changes, planning a voyage in short stages, laying up between seasons, safe havens for tropical storm seasons and communications.

 

The third part is ‘Offshore Routines’ including life onboard, maintenance, daily routines, watch systems entertainment, provisions, water and fuel, down wind sails, wind vanes and automatic pilots, electricity generation and consumption, fishing and diving, photography, heavy weather, emergency preparations and essential spares.
