Racing at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club
Second Points Series - Race 2
In glorious sunshine, the race sequence started well. That was until the J24 and Sport boat class assembled and shot across the line at the committee boat end a good couple of seconds ahead of the start time! A general recall was made and all boats came back to the line rather slower than they had crossed it. The start sequence continued and with a very slightly more subdued J and F class start at 1850.
All the courses set by the Race Officer took the yachts across from the St Mawes area to Trefusis and then, for the bigger yachts, out to Old Wall and Central. Although Old Wall mark had been relaid on the night, the Central mark was not and only the intervention of a voice from Double Jeopardy indicated that the mark was missing! This caused a major problem for the A Class who had a good sail but sadly the race had to be abandoned. Some speedy activity with the two RIBs dropped a replacement mark for Central allowing the late starting J24s and Sport boats to go round the mark. This recovered two of the classes but was too late to allow A class to be reinstated.
The multi hulls put in a good show for this race with 4 yachts in the running. They sped around their extended course for their class demonstrating a good turn of speed in the wind. Some made it back into mono hulls as the windward hulls lifted from the water and the yachts went even faster.
In contrast, the good showing from the Sunbeams and the two SMODs showed a more sprightly pace on their courses up to Vilt area and back to South Narrows before returning home.
The harbour finish completed the course and, along with the apology from the Race Officer regarding Central, seemed to recover what was a good evenings racing (mostly!).
