Racing at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club

RCYC CLUB RACING DISTANCE PLANNER

Guidance Notes

  1. Race duration is planned for 90 minutes.
  2. All Classes except M prefer windward leeward courses
  3. D class like a short race with short legs
  4. M Class like courses with 90 degrees (or more) reaching legs – lower angles in low winds, higher angle in high winds.
  5. In wind speeds up to 8 knots ALWAYS use the Finish line at the Docks
  6. For all Classes except M,  course distances are based on equal upwind and downwind legs.
  7. Tide effect is not critical in wind speeds above 12 but take care with windward leg planning in 6 to 9 knot winds as a long beat into tide will dramatically reduce VMG to windward.
  8. In higher wind ranges keep Class V and D on same/similar course proximity for safety cover. If same course used then plan extra round for V to allow for the increased distance.
  9. In wind speeds above 12 try to provide F Class with a separate leeward mark to other classes.
  10. Before deciding on wind speed for course length selection, take account of trend (is speed increasing or decreasing over period sampled)
