Racing at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club
RCYC CLUB RACING DISTANCE PLANNER
Guidance Notes
- Race duration is planned for 90 minutes.
- All Classes except M prefer windward leeward courses
- D class like a short race with short legs
- M Class like courses with 90 degrees (or more) reaching legs – lower angles in low winds, higher angle in high winds.
- In wind speeds up to 8 knots ALWAYS use the Finish line at the Docks
- For all Classes except M, course distances are based on equal upwind and downwind legs.
- Tide effect is not critical in wind speeds above 12 but take care with windward leg planning in 6 to 9 knot winds as a long beat into tide will dramatically reduce VMG to windward.
- In higher wind ranges keep Class V and D on same/similar course proximity for safety cover. If same course used then plan extra round for V to allow for the increased distance.
- In wind speeds above 12 try to provide F Class with a separate leeward mark to other classes.
- Before deciding on wind speed for course length selection, take account of trend (is speed increasing or decreasing over period sampled)
