From the Sailing Secretary - dinghy security

Many of you know already that there has been a spate of dinghy thefts in Falmouth Harbour over the last few weeks. Several have been taken from the Club premises, some from inside the dinghy compound, but most from the outside storage on the events quay.  Each time there has been a theft, the Police have been informed, but it is difficult to sometimes even account for missing dinghies as to whether they are being used by Members at the time or have been stolen.

The Club boatman, myself and others have retrieved dinghies. Often returning drunks simply steal dinghies, travel late at night to Flushing and then cast them adrift so they float around the Harbour.

Whilst the Club endeavours to protect Members property, individuals should protect their craft by locking away paddles, rowlocks and outboards.  It is too easy to steal boats and use them if paddles, rowlocks and outboards are accessible.

The Flag Officers and House Committee are actively pursuing security issues on several points at the moment after recommendations that have been made both by the Police and specialist security companies.

LOCK IT UP

ENSURE YOUR NUMBER STICKER IS ON THE DINGHY

MARK YOUR YACHT NAME ON THE DINGHY

Note that the Clubs insurance policy does not extend to Members boats and equipment left on the premises.

Regards

Hon Sailing Secretary
