WiFi Trail at the Clubhouse

Following a number of discussions, the House Committee has agreed to a three-month trial of the use of WiFi in the Club. This note announces the availability of the service and how to gain access to it.

The WiFi service at the Club allows access to the internet from members’ laptop PCs, mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs like Blackberries). Currently there is no charge for this service for members although it is a secure link. After the trial period, depending on comments received and the take-up, the service may be disabled, remain or be charged.

To access the system, each member will be asked to sign a disclaimer before the access key or password is provided. Information on settings to connect to the service and the blank disclaimer form are available from the Administration Office or here.

With the imminent installation of a bigger aerial (already owned by the Club), the range for this wire-less facility is approximately from Kiln Quay to Falmouth Town waterfront (almost to Water sport Centre) to the Beacon and past the Greenbank by some distance. However, the levels of service for the link will reduce as you are physically further from the Club premises. Those members with moorings in the Penryn river in front of the Club should be able to access the network from their boat.

The House Committee was concerned on the ‘disruption potential’ of laptops being used in the Club. We would ask that if you use the service, you confine your PC usage in the Club to the Upper Deck. Additionally we ask that you respect the wishes and concerns of other Club members if asked to desist.

Any comments, either for and against the provision of this service should be entered into the Suggestion book or emailed to web@royalcornwallyachtclub.org. At the end of the trial, the comments and usage levels will be assessed and a decision made by the House Committee on the route forward.

Cheers

Phil Sissons
