Set sail for Savills!

The perfect mix of sun and wind greeted the 30 teams competing in the second annual Savills Regatta in Falmouth on May 19th. Organised once again by Savills’ Truro office and hosted by the prestigious Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, the event was even bigger than last year and attracted over thirty yachts in four classes from The Fal, Helford and Fowey estuaries crewed by both corporate and private teams. Competitive spirits along with a stiff easterly breeze produced an action-packed afternoon for both participants and spectators alike and race officer Ray Stedman and his team set a challenging course around the Carrick Roads with the finish line off the Clubhouse.

Class A for IRC yachts was won by the slippery Melges 24 entered by Tim Cunliffe of environmental engineering firm H2OK, who also picked up a case of champagne for line honours.  For the second year running Tony Statham’s J109 ‘Jacobi’ was runner-up, while Truro-based Scott Burridge Commercial finished 3rd aboard Con Mulcahy’s DB1 ‘Shenanigan’.

After sweeping the board in Class A at last year’s event, Foot Anstey solicitors again entered two teams for 2008, with one of these being a Laser SB3 skippered by Toby Claridge competing in the Sportsboat Class F.  After surviving a dunking on the crowded start line following a collision with Savills ‘Tomcat’, Toby was hauled back aboard by his crew and went on take the winning gun.  Besides champagne, Toby was also presented with a snorkel pack for his efforts!

Class E for yachts racing under Portsmouth Yardstick was a close-run affair with just 30 seconds separating the first four yachts.  Guy English’s ‘Levity’ came out on top from Chris Perkins’ beautiful ‘Cupid’ and Jack Penty’s ‘Noon Hi’.

This year the Sunbeam class saw six entries with these classic dayboats making a real treat for Savills’ guests aboard the spectator yacht.  Lester Smith’s ‘Pixy’ took the winning gun from Roger Graffy’s ‘Milly’ (Mylor Yacht Harbour) and ‘Saucy Sally’ sailed by John Lowry and Peter Stonehouse of Hine Downing Solicitors.

The Foot Anstey team scooped the Corporate class prize and the Private class award was won by Lester Smith’s ‘Pixy’ in the Sunbeam class.

For the second year running the prize for Best Dressed Crew went to Jonathan Haward and his team aboard ‘Adagio’ sponsored by The County Homesearch Company and Stephens & Scown Solicitors.  Quentin Wyvern-Batt’s very elegant ketch ‘Pavan’ picked up a prize for the most luxurious yacht on the race course.

Jonathan Cunliffe, from Savills, who skippered Savills own entry ‘Tomcat’ to fourth place in Class A commented, “We were keen to build on the success of last year’s inaugural event and the weather was on our side again this year.  Last year 20 yachts, this year 30 yachts, so next year the target will be 40!”  Over £500 was raised for The Falmouth Tall Ships Association from the many corporate entries, and this will assist with the port’s hosting of the start of the Funchal Tall Ships regatta in September.

After the race, over 250 people, including the crews, Savills staff and clients celebrated on the Club lawn with a prizegiving conducted by Nick Barwell,  Commodore of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club and Martin Lamb, Director of Savills.  As competitors and guests mingled, it seemed clear that the Savills Regatta has already become a keenly anticipated fixture on the yachting calendar and is now set to become the biggest one-day annual yachting event in the region.
