Meanderers Meetings

As a recent innovation, the Club supports a weekly meeting of the 'Meanderers'. This group of social and relaxed yachtsmen and ladies started meeting each Wednesday, but now alternate this with Thursday every two weeks. The dates for the next meetings are below.

Some bring yachts and boats, some bring food and drink and others just bring themselves. The plan is essentially to bring crewing members in touch with owner members, to use the yachts more frequently and to have a good relaxing day sailing or anchored in the areas of Falmouth Bay or Carrick Road. The overall plan of the scheme resulted from a meeting held on May 27th.

The group has met a number of times and the table below contains links to the various activities on these meetings and to the various photographs that have been passed for public consumption. In the five weeks since we started Meandering, those who have come aboard have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  Rafting up has at times been hilarious.

We migrate to one boat for “lunch and laughs” for something like two hours before returning.  Typically three boats go out with ten or more members.  We have visited Durgan in the Helford twice. On one foul day, one of us got to Helford village but the other two boats turned back for a late lunch back at base.  We have sailed up river and moored off Tregothnan and last Wednesday we sailed to Nare Point and rafted up in the bay where three swam.

Why not join us for a very sociable day out?  Just turn up at the Club at 09.30am with or without a boat.

At the request of other boat owners it has been decided to vary Meanderers between Wednesdays and Thursdays on alternate weeks. The next Meanderers will be at 09.30am on Thursday 16th July, then Wednesday 22nd and alternating weekly thereafter.

Hopefully we will be able to sail, weather permitting, until the end of October so the diary of Meanderers meets will now be as below.

MEANDERERS SCHEME

On 27th May, 2009, the Club hosted a good meeting to discuss implementing this scheme here as quickly as possible.  There was good representation from interested Members and several wrote giving apologies for not being able to attend the meeting, but wishing to be part of the scheme.

The main benefits of the scheme are:

  1. All Members of the Club, whether boat owners or willing crews will be able to participate.
  2. We will all visit parts of Cornwall we know of, but have not necessarily been to by water.
  3. It will encourage Members and their guests onto the water.
  4. Racing and Cruising Members will want to participate, or indeed it will bring them together.
  5. It will stimulate new friendships and contacts between the Members.
  6. Skippers will be able and encouraged to crew on other Members boats to gain knowledge of their craft.

The meeting decided to commence the scheme on Wednesday 3rd June.  We will meet in the Club House at 0930 hours and from there skippers will liaise with potential crews and go to their boats with them.  The fleet will proceed to an agreed destination, anchor, tie up or raft up for lunch, drinks, etc and then come home for late afternoon, 1730 hours is the suggested finish time.  All you have to bring is a packed lunch, etc and skippers their boats!  Weather will dictate destination, but breeze flat seas and sunshine will enable ‘Meanderers’ to go to places such as Portloe, Portscatho, Porthcurnow, Porthoustock, Coverack and Helford.  In weather that is limiting we will explore Carrick Roads where there is seventy miles of creek that can be explored.

It’s exciting and I will be there as a crew looking for a boat as will some other ‘Boy Racers’ who want to do some Club cruising.  Brian Morgan, who brought the concept of the scheme to the Club, with Peter Flutter will be our contacts and ‘Managers’ of the scheme.  If you can please contact them on their e-mail addresses as follows:
